This week, works have commenced at North Devon District Hospital to enhance passive fire protection measures within key compartment lines. Our team is installing FIREFLY Titan Lite fire barrier systems above selected door voids to reinforce fire compartmentation and support ongoing compliance with healthcare fire safety standards.
In hospital environments, maintaining effective compartmentation is critical. While fire-rated doors provide protection at opening level, unprotected ceiling voids above door heads can allow fire and smoke to spread between compartments. Installing flexible fire barriers above these voids ensures the integrity of the fire strategy is maintained.
Titan Lite is a three-layer, glass fibre–based fire barrier system designed fo
r use in concealed spaces. It provides up to 120 minutes integrity and 60 minutes insulation in vertical applications when installed in accordance with tested details to BS 476 Part 20/22. Its lightweight and flexible construction makes it particularly suitable for restricted ceiling voids where rigid board systems may be impractical.
The works involve forming a continuous vertical barrier above the door head within the ceiling void, fixed to suitable supporting steel angles and installed with the specified overlaps and staggered joints to maintain performance. All installations are completed in line with manufacturer guidance and project specifications.
Works are being undertaken in coordination with the hospital estates team to minimise disruption while maintaining safe access and compliant fire escape routes throughout.
This upgrade strengthens the hospital’s passive fire protection measures and supports long-term life safety resilience across the site.
